Traditional wooden pilot gig boats need quite a lot of maintenance, it's Leah C's turn this winter. She needs quite a bit of work & the first stages are to sand the inside & afterwards we'll strip the outside with heat guns & scrapers.![]()

Afterwards she is being sent off to have all her internal woodwork removed & about 20 ribs need replacing (the thin bent wooden strips), then she's being put back together & painted ready for the new season.![]()

Spot the seal! 😍 Always inquisitive, we always 'easy up' (stop rowing) when we see them. Much easier to photograph than Porpoise & Dolphins, which pop up & then disappear just as you get your phone out!![]()

If you've had a hard day, exercise out on the water really does help. You don't need any previous experience or be a keen athlete to be a gig rower. It's a sport that caters for a wide range of ages, not just the youngsters! If you decide you want to compete against other clubs, there are open races (any age), over 40's, 50's & 60 year old categories 😅
Happy New Year from everyone at Clovelly Pilot Gig Club, what a year we've had 😍. Here's a few pics from 2024. Have you ever thought of having a go at rowing? We've got members of all ages & sizes & lots of us have learnt later in life with no previous experience. Rowing is one of the best all-round exercises & you don't have to be fit to have a go. We train new people all year & apart from going out to sea, we've 5 indoor rowing machines you can use too.![]()
